Tarpon Springs sits at the northern tip of Pinellas County and is unlike anywhere else on the Gulf coast. The Sponge Docks along Dodecanese Boulevard are a working waterfront — Greek immigrants built the sponge industry here in the early 1900s, and the cultural footprint is still everywhere from the bakeries on Athens Street to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral. For renters, this means a city with a real, distinct character instead of generic suburb-of-Tampa flavor.
The Anclote River runs through Tarpon Springs out to the Gulf, and the western half of the city is the boat- and water-oriented side: Sunset Beach, the Sponge Docks district, and the residential pockets between them. The eastern half is more conventional — established single-family neighborhoods, Tarpon Springs Golf Course, the schools around the Trinity-side border. ZIPs 34688 and 34689 cover the city.
Rental inventory tilts older — block ranch homes, mid-century bungalows close to downtown, and a smaller number of newer construction in the eastern subdivisions. Most are single-family on small lots; condo and townhome options are limited compared to Clearwater. If you want walkability and water access without paying Dunedin or Palm Harbor prices, Tarpon Springs is one of the better-kept secrets in north Pinellas.

Walkable to Dodecanese Boulevard, the docks, and the Greek restaurants. Bungalows and small single-family on tight lots. Tourist-heavy on weekends but quiet midweek.
Small peninsula on the Gulf side with a public beach. Mix of older waterfront single-family and newer rebuilds. Premium for direct beach access; everything within a few blocks is more reasonable.
The eastern stretch toward Trinity is mostly newer subdivisions and golf-course communities. More conventional Florida suburbia — bigger lots, newer construction, and an easier commute to Tampa via SR 580.
Generally lower than Palm Harbor or Dunedin. 2-bedroom homes around $1,800-2,400, 3-bedroom $2,200-3,000. Waterfront and Sunset Beach properties price higher. Call (727) 943-9500 for current availability.
The Sponge Docks are tourist-heavy on weekends and during peak season (Oct-April). The rest of the city is quiet residential — you only see the crowds if you live within a few blocks of Dodecanese Boulevard.
Pinellas County Schools. Tarpon Springs High is the main high school; East Lake High covers some of the eastern Tarpon neighborhoods. Elementary and middle zones vary by address.
Most of our Tarpon Springs rentals welcome dogs and cats with a deposit. A few older homes have specific restrictions (no large breeds, e.g.); each listing notes the policy.
Plan on 45-60 minutes to Westshore via Alt-19 or US-19. Longer to downtown Tampa. The Suncoast Parkway is the fastest option (entrance just east in Pasco) — gets you to Tampa proper in about 40 minutes off-peak.
